Old time technology for writers

At a recent visit to my parents' home, they surprised me with an early Christmas gift...

...writing technology that is truly "old school."

This beautiful little wooden box is an antique writing desk from my great-grandfather's family. It's about 11" x 8".
Let's peek inside, shall we?
Here's the writing desk opened fully. The black surface is a very thin felt, for the writing surface. It can sit on the writer's lap...an early "laptop"??
Sweet little glass ink bottles with metal tops.
There's some old dried-up ink inside...I wonder if I could buy or make some new ink?
A little compartment with a lid...maybe for holding stamps?
One side of the writing surface opens to reveal storage space for stationery.
The other side lifts open for more storage...my grandmother tucked these really-truly fountain pens into this compartment.
These pens are so beautiful and classic. I can type really fast, but I have no clue how to use these. I wish I knew how!
The smaller pen has a velvet-lined case...very classy.

Thank you, Mom and Dad! I love my very special early Christmas present!

Very classy. Josh says he knows how to use the pens, now we just need to find you some ink that you two can practice with.

how wonderful. I agree that Nana and Granddad send very thoughtful gifts. I have revived a platter and bowl set that I have used for entertaining a few times and love them.

That is really something. I was watching a movie the other day (it took place in the mid-1920s) and one of the characters had a writing box just like that one.
